A Brave Misstep
When Lisa Swanson invites Marianne and me out for coffee and chit-chat, I am pleased to accept. We havenât had honest to goodness girl time in months, so this is a welcome note on my calendar. When I pull into The Snuggle Inn, a coziness falls over me even before I am greeted by the warmth of the buildingâs heater. I have fond memories of hanging out with Fisher in the kitchen here, dropping off my cupcakes when I used to bake for The Snuggle Inn so Fisher could concentrate on his true passion: handmade pasta and fancy dinners.
Entering the inn with a box of cupcakes under my arm is nothing new. I always bring Fisher a treat when I visit.
But this box is filled with intention. With a proposal. With hope.
I didnât tell Marianne, Logan or the Live Forever Club that I reserved extra cupcakes from the orders I filled last night. I tried my hardest not to think my plan through, other than placing a phone call to the new owner of The Snuggle Inn yesterday to schedule a meeting before my coffee date with Marianne and Lisa. I know that if I think about how much I want to be selling my cupcakes at a restaurant, I will chicken out and remember that things like this have not always been a success for me in the past. Iâve had the misfortune of choosing two businesses whose owners were less than reputable, so the contracts dissolved after only a handful of weeks.
But Lenny is the new owner of The Snuggle Inn, and even though earlier this year there wasnât enough money in their budget to outsource cupcake baking to me, perhaps things have changed for them, making them open to the idea.
Perhaps Lenny just needs to try one of my cupcakes, and he will be convinced that he absolutely must have my desserts on the menu.
I am brave. I am brave. I can do this.
I chant my pep talk over and over in my mind, cheering myself on because I was too chicken to tell my usual cheerleaders that I was going to be stepping out on uneven business terrain this morning.
This needs to be my thing. I need to be brave without a cheering section.
Or I could cancel the meeting, and no one would ever know.
The thought to ditch is tempting, but Iâve come this far. Might as well see how far taking a leap for my business will get me.
I donât beeline for the kitchen as I usually do to greet Fisher. Instead, I wait at the front desk, smiling at the receptionist and requesting she tell Lenny I am here for our eleven oâclock meeting.
My palms are sweaty, so much that I worry I will leave wet marks on the pink box, so I set it on the reception desk. When a man in his forties comes around the corner wearing a white dress shirt and navy trousers, his black hair slicked to the side with a bit too much gel, I smile at him in lieu of offering to shake his hand.
